Swim News and Updates
Did You Know?
You may have noticed that several months ago Mt. Tam switched its water chlorination system for both our outdoor and indoor pools. Even if I hadn’t gotten the memo about the change, I could tell right away the first time I swam. The water felt like silk on my skin, my bathing suit didn’t smell like chlorine and after swimming when I went to the bank, no one said “What smells like chlorine in here!” Instead of using chlorine to sanitize our pools, we use dissolved salt. The salt is broken down through electrolysis and the resulting chemical reaction is hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite which sanitizes the pool. So a salt water pool is not chlorine-free, we just do not add chlorine directly into the water The pool isn’t salty like the ocean or the Dead Sea but is about the same as the consistency of tears. Does a swimmer swim faster in a salt water pool? According to the information I read, the increase in buoyancy from the salt water (which increases your swimming speed) together with the denser water from the addition of salt (which may create more resistance and slows down your speed) just about cancels each other out. So, do not expect to swim faster!
Pro Shop News
We are starting a Pros' Corner DVD and book lending library which is located in the Pro Shop. Right now we have swim and fitness DVDs and books for you to borrow. If you have any books that you would like to share with the pro corner library, please bring them by and we will add them to our library. We will soon have tennis and golf books to borrow as well.
Exercise a Must
Don’t forget to exercise during the busy holiday season ahead! We have added a Tuesday night masters swim workout from 6-7 for all of you who cannot join us in the daytime. Come try it!
Remember
Our pools are not life guarded. Please accompany your children when they are swimming, even if you think they are good swimmers. Children need supervision. This means that if you have your children in the pool, you must be either with them or watching them, not swimming laps on your own.
